Pakistan’s journey toward advanced digital connectivity is gaining momentum as Starlink, the satellite-based internet service by SpaceX, continues to work on securing its license to operate in the country.
During a recent briefing to the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on IT, chaired by Senator Palwasha Khan, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) revealed that Starlink submitted its license application on February 24, 2022. The company is now actively coordinating with regulatory bodies to fulfill the necessary legal and technical requirements.

For operations to proceed, Starlink must first complete its registration with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) and the Pakistan Single Window (PSW) system. PTA clarified that the licensing process cannot move forward until these steps are finalized. The authority also confirmed that Elon Musk has assured compliance with all national policies, ensuring that its services will align with Pakistan’s regulatory framework.
Adding to the competition, Shanghai Space Technology has also expressed interest in entering the Pakistani market. This growing interest from global players highlights Pakistan’s potential as a hub for modern connectivity solutions. Meanwhile, the Standing Committee has invited SUPARCO, the country’s space research organization, to discuss oversight and frameworks for space-related technologies.
If approved, Starlink could revolutionize Pakistan’s internet infrastructure by delivering fast, reliable, and affordable satellite-based connectivity to even the most remote regions. For millions of people in underserved areas, this could mean better access to education, business opportunities, and digital services. Elon Musk has previously stated that he is awaiting government approval, fueling optimism about a new era of connectivity for Pakistan.
