Karachi inhabitants have been advised to stay vigilant because another bout of severe rain is predicted to hit the city as well as other areas of Sindh during the 23rd and 24th of August.

Based on meteorologists’ estimates, a strong storm system of weather that has developed over India is moving slowly towards Pakistan with dense clouds and heavy levels of humidity. The system could create torrential downpours, and could cause urban flooding particularly those in Karachi‘s lower-lying areas.
The experts warn that the coming storms could be more intense than the rain earlier in the week and left many areas submerged as a result of blocked drainage and insufficient infrastructure.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has already forecast higher than usual rainfall during the monsoon season this year. In spite of previous warnings, the authorities as well as citizens were not prepared during the previous storm that caused traffic disruptions in the city, power cuts, and water logging throughout the city.
Public agencies are currently under pressure to speed up preparations by sending emergency teams, clearing channels for drainage, and taking the assistance of communities in need.
Currently, the public is advised to
- Be aware and stay clear of unnecessary traveling during severe showers.
- Protect your home and vehicle from flooding
- Prepare emergency supplies in the event of a flood
The threat of a storm emphasizes the fragility of Karachi’s infrastructure in extreme weather. Due to climate change, which is intensifying rainfall patterns, experts stress the need for the long-term plan and sustainable solutions for urban development are the only route to go forward. Short-term solutions will not suffice.
As Sindh is getting ready to a rainy weekend it is a matter of urgency: Is Karachi finally fully prepared? Or will inhabitants once more be forced to face the storm on their own?
