Officials have confirmed they had confirmed that PTA provided a thorough explanation in writing to the Prime Minister’s Office and assured that there was no illegal charging had taken place. The regulator stressed that all modifications to the tariff that were made by Jazz had been in compliance to the accepted regulation framework and were subject to periodic confirmation.

In the announcement, PTA further stressed that the issue was caused through the misinterpretation of social media as an “propaganda campaign” intended to make the regulator appear to be in doubt about its supervision. “Every modification to the tariff structure is examined and approved prior to the revision. The tariff revision has not been in contravention of the approved structure ,”

The issue came to light following auditors’ findings revealed an amount of Rs. 6.58 billion in excess costs, causing concern about the quarterly revision of tariffs, and indicating that collection may be higher than the 15% margin allowed by the regulator.

The issue has been brought to it’s way to the Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication headed by Senator Palwasha Khan. The committee has ordered members of the PTA Chairman to show up on August 25, The members of the committee are likely to ask for an explanation of the regulatory’s practices for monitoring and the measures it has taken to protect the consumer’s interests.
