FBR Introduces Pakistan’s First Al-Based Customs Clearance System

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has launched Pakistan’s first AI-powered Customs Clearance and Risk Management System (RMS), marking a major step in trade modernization. This innovative project, initiated under the direction of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, aims to make customs operations faster, more transparent, and less dependent on human involvement.

The system uses artificial intelligence and automated bots to analyze the type and value of imported goods. By detecting risks more accurately, it speeds up the clearance process and minimizes unnecessary delays at ports. This upgrade is expected to cut costs for businesses and reduce reliance on lengthy manual procedures.

Initial testing showed impressive results, with a 92% performance boost and nearly 2.5 times more Goods Declarations (GDs) cleared through the green channel. This channel, meant for low-risk shipments, allows trusted traders to move goods quickly with fewer inspections.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the system as a landmark achievement, noting that it will promote ease of doing business, support honest taxpayers, and help fight corruption. He also emphasized the importance of making the system sustainable and fully integrated.

With this launch, Pakistan takes a big step toward digital governance and smart trade facilitation. The AI-based RMS promises efficiency, fairness, and greater trust in the country’s customs operations, benefitting both traders and the national economy.
