The metropolis experienced heavy rain on Tuesday, providing respite from the scorching heat, however, it also caused significant disruptions to everyday life in different regions within the city.
As per the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) several areas of Karachi including Saddar Gulshan-eIqbal, North Nazimabad, Malir, Clifton, and Korangi experienced rains that ranged from moderate to severe, accompanied by a roaring wind. The downpours, which began in the early hours of the morning and continued to recur all day.

While the rains helped to lower temperatures and relieved the humid weather, it revealed the city’s persistent infrastructure and drainage issues. The major roads like Sharae Faisal, University Road as well as MA Jinnah Road were inundated and caused congestion and lengthy delays. Many commuters complained of being stuck when vehicles swam bumper-to-bumper across the streets that were flooded.
In the low-lying areas, accumulated water got into shops and homes which exacerbated residents’ issues. Electricity supply was affected in several areas due to the rain, which caused malfunctions or feeder trips. K-Electric which is the power provider for this city stated that Ground teams are working to repair power supply, but warned residents to avoid electrical installations during the downpours.
Authorities have confirmed they had emergency responders who were employed to clean important arteries and help residents. Yet, municipal bodies received criticism from residents who were unhappy with the ineffective drains, in spite of regular warnings of the monsoon.
In the meantime, the PMD has forecast for more storms and rain in Karachi in the coming two to three days. They have also warned of the possibility of flooding in urban areas in areas that are vulnerable. Citizens are urged to stay clear of unnecessary travel and to take preventive measures.
