CM Maryam Nawaz Plans Japanese Water Filtration and Waste Management System in Punjab

Maryam Nawaz

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif visited Japan’s largest water filtration and waste treatment plant in Yokohama during her official trip, where she announced plans to introduce similar modern systems in Punjab.

The Yokohama plant, regarded as one of the most advanced globally, treats nearly 1.5 million cubic meters of wastewater daily. Along with purifying water, the facility also produces energy from waste, easing the burden on traditional energy sources.

It further employs cutting-edge recycling methods to reduce landfill waste an approach Punjab hopes to replicate for better environmental protection and urban management.

Speaking on the occasion, Maryam Nawaz emphasized that access to clean water remains a top priority for her government. She said adopting Japanese technology will allow Punjab to manage waste more effectively, reduce contamination, and improve public health standards.

Officials confirmed that the cooperation will include building modern water treatment plants, introducing advanced recycling systems, and developing a sustainable model that supports both safe drinking water and cleaner cities.

The Chief Minister underscored Punjab’s commitment to learning from global best practices, saying the adoption of these systems will help address long-standing challenges in water safety and waste management while moving the province closer to international standards of environmental care and urban development.
