The Punjab government has announced that Lahore will see its first-ever tram service begin operations in February 2026, marking a major step toward modernizing the city’s transport network.

Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar confirmed that the test run of the tram service has already been successfully completed. The service will operate from Thokar to Harbanspura, with each tram capable of carrying up to 270 passengers at a time.

The $3 million project has been developed with support from Punjab NESPAK and PMA officials, following a detailed study tour to China where experts examined advanced urban transport systems.

Officials say the tram will provide residents with a modern, eco-friendly travel option, reducing reliance on motorcycles and private cars while helping cut down on urban congestion.

Alongside Lahore’s tram, the government has also unveiled plans for metro train projects in Faisalabad and Gujranwala. According to the minister, the Faisalabad metro will serve around 300,000 passengers daily, while the Gujranwala metro is expected to cater to 140,000 passengers each day.

These projects are part of Punjab’s broader strategy to upgrade public transport infrastructure, improve daily commuting, and tackle air pollution a growing concern in major cities across the province.

By investing in reliable and affordable public transport, the government hopes to encourage citizens to shift away from private vehicles, making travel both easier and cleaner.

The launch of these projects signals a transformative step for Punjab’s transport system, paving the way for a greener, more efficient future.
